Learn more about Chelsea’s new signings – Summer 2020

Chelsea FC are having a superb summer transfer window after being banned from signing anyone last summer. The London club sold Eden Hazard last summer and kept the money generated from his sale, as they didn’t sign anyone in the January transfer window as well. Chelsea made sure that they were going to have a huge summer after they didn’t sign anyone in January and also qualified for the Champions League.

Roman Abramovich has made sure that Lampard and the Chelsea fans get what they deserve after spending a year without a signing. The Russian owner has signed Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva. It has also been reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that Kai Havertz is also very close to a move after Chelsea have agreed on a fee for him.

Let us now have a look at how the new Chelsea signings play and stats related to them.

HAKIM ZIYECH –

Hakim Ziyech is one of the most technically advance players in the world having played for four years. The Morocco captain can play in the right-wing as well as a central attacking midfielder and is known for his dribbles and wand of a left foot. Out of the four seasons he has played at Ajax, Ziyech has won Eredivisie Player of the Year thrice.

In February this year, Chelsea confirmed Ziyech will be joining the Blues at the beginning of the 2020/21 season for €40m. Last season, the 27-year old played 35 games for Ajax in which he scored eight goals and provided 21 assists. In Lampard’s system, Ziyech will mostly be used on the right flank, with the responsibility of cutting in to create chances or scoring himself.

TIMO WERNER –

One of the hottest prospects coming into the summer transfer window, Timo Werner signed for Chelsea after being linked to Liverpool all season long. The German striker wreaked havoc in the Bundesliga last season and thus was eager to move to the Premier League. Werner had a release clause of about €53m, which Chelsea paid and hijacked his move to Liverpool.

The 24-year old can play as a centre-forward, as a second-striker or as a left-winger, and is known for his raw pace and finishing ability. Last season, Timo Werner played 45 games for RB Leipzig in which he scored 34 goals and also provided 13 assists. In Lampard’s system, Werner can play a striker or in the left-wing and will be given the main goalscoring duty in the team.

MALANG SARR –

Sarr joins Chelsea

Out of all the transfers Chelsea have made this summer yet, Malang Sarr is the player who has made the least noise. The 21-year French defender is one of the best young defenders in the world and has all the attributes of becoming world-class. Sarr, being only 21-years old, has played over 100 games for in Ligue-1 and is the second-youngest player to score on debut for Nice.

Chelsea signed Sarr on a free transfer, as his contract will Nice ran out last month and the Frenchman didn’t want to renew it. It has been reported that the Blues will send him on-loan for a year to give him much-needed game-time. The left-footed centre-back might just be the key to unlock Chelsea’s dreadful defence and might as well turn out to be a masterstroke.

BEN CHILWELL –

Ben Chilwell has gathered a lot of laurels with his performances at Leicester last season and Chelsea have done well to sign him. The Blues had problems at left-back last season while playing four at the back, as neither Alonso nor Emerson are defensively good. Chilwell has been one of the best left-backs this season and has been solid defensively and great going forward.

Chelsea finally signed the 23-year old Englishman with a reported fee of £50m, after being linked with him for more than a month. It is expected of Chilwell to walk into Chelsea’s starting XI and make the left-back his spot. Chilwell has been playing the Premier League consistently from the past three seasons and thus might find it easy to settle into the Chelsea side.

THIAGO SILVA –

Arguably one of the best and the most experienced centre-backs in the world, Thiago Silva is a big name in the world of football. The Brazilian captain has played for some big clubs like AC Milan and PSG and is coming towards the twilight of his career. But he is expected to bring the much-needed solidity, stability and leadership into the Chelsea defence.

Chelsea signed the Brazilian centre-back for a free transfer, as Silva’s contract with PSG came to an end. Silva will walk into almost every side in the world and will be expected to lead the talented yet inexperienced Chelsea side to success. Chelsea will probably be Silva’s last big club and thus he will give it all he has got for the success of the team.

KAI HAVERTZ –

Along with Jadon Sancho, Kai Havertz has been the most talked-about player who was keen on a move this transfer window. The German has been a star in a mediocre Bayer Leverkusen and has shown his versatility. Kai Havertz has joined Chelsea for a reported fee of £75.8m as the Blues handed him a five-year contract.

Havertz is a player who is very unpredictable because of his versatility and can be used in various positions in different formations. With his physicality and technicality, Havertz can play anywhere in the front-4 for Chelsea and will be a wild-card for Frank Lampard. The 21-year old possesses all the qualities to become a legend for Chelsea in the long run, as he has shown in his Leverkusen days.

XAVIER MBUYAMBA –

Chelsea have also signed 18-year old Dutch footballer Xavier Mbuyamba, who plied his trade at Barcelona earlier. He has been compared to the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, not just because of his nationality and his position but because of his ball-playing style. The centre-back will join the Chelsea u-23s and Lampard would want him to develop into a beast.

The 6’5” defender buys into Lampard’s philosophy of nurturing young and talented players into the first-team. His natural position is centre-back, but the Dutch youngster has also played as a right-back at Barcelona. It is widely believed that he will turn into one of the best young defenders in the world and Chelsea will certainly hope the same.
