Premier League launches enquiry into Chelsea violations under Roman Abramovich

The Premier League are conducting an inquiry into potential violations of financial regulations that may have occurred during Roman Abramovich’s time as owner of Chelsea.

This investigation arises in response to revelations made by the club’s recent owners, which have unveiled a sequence of financial dealings spanning from 2012 to 2019.

As reported by Sky Sports, the investigation is primarily centred around substantial payments, totalling millions of pounds, that were directed towards undisclosed offshore companies.

The precise nature of these transactions remains obscure, although certain offshore entities appear to have affiliations with football agents and intermediaries.

However, due to the secretive nature of these companies, uncovering the true beneficiaries behind these transactions has proven to be challenging. Interestingly, there are rumours alluding to potential ties with Russia.

One transaction being closely examined involves a payment made to a player’s family. It is believed that this payment was done to current Barcelona centre-back Christensen’s father before the defender joined the Blue’s academy from Brondby.

This particular incident has attracted added attention due to its prior investigation. The Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium, which purchased the club for £2.5 billion in the past year, revealed the alleged instances of financial irregularities.

Consequently, the club faces the potential of severe penalties from the Premier League, even though any potential breaches of regulations occurred during Abramovich’s ownership.

Potential repercussions include fines and even deductions of points, casting a shadow over Chelsea’s future plans.

Amid the ongoing inquiries, a minimum of six offshore companies have been identified as recipients of payments.  These payments are related to player transfers and involve considerable sums of money.

Notably, these transactions were not disclosed in the club’s annual financial reports submitted to pertinent football authorities such as the FA, Premier League, and UEFA.

As the Premier League conducts a more thorough examination of the club’s financial matters, Chelsea have now become the central focus of attention.

Numerous uncertainties arise regarding the potential consequences of this investigation on the club’s reputation and for promoting financial openness in the world of sports.
