Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy joins Chelsea on a five-year contract agreement

Chelsea has signed Senegal goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy from Ligue 1 club, Stade Rennes with a contract of five-year as announced by their website.

As per the British media reports, the Blues paid around 22 million pounds ($28.01 million) for the 28-year-old  goalkeeper although the money involved was not officially disclosed.

Mendy still had three years remaining on his contract with Rennes but he opted to join Frank Lampard’s side. The proposition laid before was impressive enough to lure him into the Stamford Bridge.

“I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my teammates and can’t wait to get started,” Mendy told the club’s website.

Chelsea’s decision to boost their goalkeeping options was taken following their goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga’s disastrous season last year, which meant that Chelsea were ready to add a new keeper to the squad.

But his latest errors in the defeat against Liverpool confirmed that Kepa will definitely sit on the bench for the following crucial matches. The new goalkeeper’s arrival was imminent.

Mendy’s arrival in Stamford Bridge will certainly put pressure on Kepa’s future in the team. Recently, he has been struggling mentally rather than physically and he has to work really hard to get back to what he was.

The Senegalese keeper, Mendy was vital in the qualification of Rennes in the Champions League for the first time last season.

In 33 matches, he has 13 clean sheets and conceded just 31 goals for Rennes before football stopped due to the COVID pandemic.
