Tottenham Hotspurs have emerged as a leading candidate in securing the transfer of World-Cup winning striker Olivier Giroud from Chelsea FC if the veteran French International opts to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Jose Mourinho, who currently manages the Tottenham Hotspurs side, is believed to be a big fan of Giroud and would be interested in signing the prolific goal scorer in the upcoming transfer window. Chelsea’s recent spree in the transfer market has done little to convince Giroud that he will get considerable time on the pitch for the Blues in the future seasons.
Despite interest from Tottenham Hotspurs as well as Serie A giants Inter Milan in acquiring his services, it has to be noted that Giroud has just signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea FC last month.
The player had admitted publicly that he was close to leaving the Blues in the January transfer window due to limited playtime awarded to him by the new Chelsea FC manager Frank Lampard. However, the player overturned his decision to leave Stamford Bridge on the insistence of Lampard who promised him more opportunities to show his worth towards the team in the remainder of the Premier League season. The suspension of the Premier League season due to the ongoing pandemic crisis has prevented Giroud from making his mark in the Blues colours so far this campaign.
Mourinho tried to sign Giroud in January but was turned down by his former club Chelsea FC who did not wish to sell the experienced striker to another Premier League team. However, things do seem different right now for both Chelsea FC and Olivier Giroud.
The Blues are spending a massive amount of money in the transfer market with the signings of attackers Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. Moreover, Lampard is eager to finalise the signing of German starlet Kai Havertz ahead of the start of the 2020-21 campaign. Such events do mean that Giroud’s place in the Chelsea FC lineup will be under immense threat due to the French striker’s age and impact on the pitch.
Having joined the Blues from Arsenal in 2018, the 33-year old Giroud has been living in London for the past eight years. It is believed that the player does not wish to relocate at this point of time in his career. Such a scenario would be suitable for London based Tottenham Hotspurs to pursue the striker’s transfer in the summer with Chelsea FC valuing the player at around £7 million.
