Why did Frank Lampard sign Timo Werner and what does Werner bring to the Chelsea FC squad?

The Blues have reportedly secured the much-coveted signing of German striker Timo Werner after weeks of media speculation regarding the transfer.

Initially, Werner was widely tipped to join Chelsea FC’s arch-rivals in the Premier League Liverpool FC, with the player having spoken publicly about his fondness for the Reds and their charismatic German coach Jurgen Klopp.

However, developments in recent weeks indicated that Liverpool FC were not keen on paying a sum of £54 million, which was the player’s release clause at RB Leipzig. The Reds management cited the adverse impact of the ongoing pandemic crisis on the Premier League side’s income and football transfer market as their primary reason for not being able to spend big bucks on signing the German international.

The inability of Liverpool FC in securing the signature of Werner presented itself as a majestic opportunity to Frank Lampard and the Blues to set their eyes on signing the player.

Lampard’s search for a clinical striker in the transfer market was intensifying recently with current Chelsea FC attackers Pedro, and Willian Borges widely tipped to leave the club in the summer. Moreover, Olivier Giroud’s ageing meant he was only suitable as a backup option under Lampard in the Chelsea FC squad.

The past season has seen Lampard give ample opportunities to young English striker Tammy Abraham to prove his worth to the Blues squad and cement his position in the starting lineup. However, despite few impressive showings by the 22-year old, Lampard felt the current Chelsea FC side required a more experienced and prolific goal scorer as they strive to compete for the Premier League in the upcoming seasons.

After the former Blues talisman Eden Hazard departed the club for Real Madrid last season, Frank Lampard was unable to replace him due to the transfer ban that had been imposed on the Premier League side by FIFA.

As a result, Lampard had to put his faith in the younger prospects of the club in Abraham, Callum Hudson Odoi and new signing Cristian Pulisic to give their best as the relatively young and inexperienced Chelsea FC squad fought hard for a UEFA Champions League spot. The current Premier League season has seen a great showing by the Blues squad which sees them sit fourth in the league table.

With a large number of funds at his disposal, Lampard sought to delve in the transfer market and acquire players whom he believed could take the Chelsea FC squad to greater heights. The English manager’s first signing turned out to be Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech from Ajax for a reported fee of €40 million.

The skilful winger will join up with his new Chelsea FC teammates ahead of the start of the 2020-21 season. Furthermore, Lampard targeted Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho as a significant signing for his side. However, Sancho’s growing insistence of moving to Manchester United FC posed problems for his signing and compelled Lampard to look elsewhere for alternatives.

The signing of Timo Werner by the Blues was mostly unexpected by football pundits and fans alike. The German international had previously spoken about his love for Liverpool FC and his desire to play under Klopp and win trophies at Anfield.

Moreover, recent news indicated that Klopp had even taken part in a video call with the 24-year old about a possible move to the Reds. However, Liverpool FC’s recent actions saw them pull out of negotiations with Leipzig and withdraw their interest in signing Werner over an inability to pay the asking price of £54 million for him. The Chelsea FC management saw this as an opportunity and pounced upon it and successfully negotiated a transfer deal for Werner.

The Blues will now be negotiating a contract with Werner with the player expected to earn £9 million per year at Stamford Bridge. The Blues fans will widely celebrate the arrival of the player as their side seeks to assert dominance once again in the Premier League as well as the Champions League.

The striker’s superb speed and goal-scoring prowess could enable him to become of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League. His performances in the Bundesliga have been terrific of late with him scoring 25 goals in 29 appearances so far this season. Lampard would aim to make the best use of Werner up front for Chelsea FC and would love if the German instantly clicks with fellow new signing Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea FC have indeed pulled a masterclass in hijacking Liverpool FC’s bid to sign Werner. However, at the same time, the Blues fans would be cautious about their new arrival not turning into a shadow of his former self and be another Fernando Torres sort of figure for them.

The Chelsea FC fans will welcome Timo Werner, and the player would hope that he soon turns out be a real fan-favourite for his new side.
