Was Spanish striker Fernando Torres a success at Chelsea Football club?

The Chelsea Football club may have witnessed the exploits of Spanish forward Fernando Torres with the former Liverpool center forward struggling for form at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the talent of Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard, Torres could not live up to the billing upfront. This got Chelsea grounded in transition as the Blues were pegged back in games following their inability to score goals for his side.

This was the scenario at the club after much hard work and flamboyant movements around the opponents’ box.

However, Torres would remain at Chelsea irrespective of his poor showings in front of the goal as the Blues kept faith with him. This was due to his immense reputation as a striker.

He earned the high profile status playing for Liverpool as his attacking quality made his partnership alongside Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard, something special to behold as the case may be.

Chelsea’s patience on the Spaniard paid dividends as he went on to win the Europa League and the UEFA Champions League.

He may not have had the consistency and quality performances Chelsea needed to thrive on a weekly basis but he’s played a key part in helping them win the UEFA Champions League.

He scored the crucial goal that got Chelsea to eliminate Barcelona in the semi-final of the competition at Nou Camp. This ensured that it ended 2-2 in Chelsea’s favour with Torres scoring the second goal to bring the tie level at 2-2.

Against Bayern Munich, Torres was very much instrumental to Chelsea’s game plan. He came on in the second half and won Chelsea’s first and only corner-kick against Bayern Munich in the finals.

This saw Chelsea drew level at 1-1 with Didier Drogba scoring the decisive headed goal much to the relief of Chelsea fans.

He may not have hit the ground running as expected from a player of his caliber but winning those two major trophies (Europa League and UEFA Champions League) is a worthy one (achievement) for any player.

This could arguably suggest that he succeeded at Chelsea as the end they say always justifies the means here as in the case of the former Liverpool man.

He may not have been fantastic on the Blue(s) shirt like Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, or Didier Drogba but he’s made his mark to suggest he wasn’t a failure at Chelsea by his (all) standards.
