Tomori reminds me of Gallas says, Joe Cole

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has hailed Chelsea’s young defender Fikayo Tomori, calling him ‘a young William Gallas’.

Tomori has been handed his chance at Chelsea this season under the guidance of Lampard who was his manager at Derby County where he was on loan last season and has impressed in the early stages of his Premier League career.

The 21-year-old’s form has seen him called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the recent Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Joe Cole was particularly impressed with Tomori’s performance in Chelsea’s away against Ajax in the Champions League where the blues came out of the game with an impressive 1-0 victory.

Fikayo Tomori showed that he can stay calm under pressure during Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Ajax on the way to keeping a clean sheet.

And the former England star Joe Cole sees a lot of his old team-mate Gallas in Tomori, a man who won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, before going on to play for Arsenal and Tottenham. ‘He reminds me a lot of the young [William] Gallas,’ Cole said on BT Sport. ‘For me, his development has been absolutely perfect. He’s had his whole youth at Chelsea in the academy, then he’s gone on loan to Derby. ‘The first six months are under Frank, then Ashley Cole’s come in to play next to him, and Ashley used to speak to him every game, you couldn’t think of a better way to educate him to become a top center-half.

‘You look at young center-halves and you look at what they’re going to be like two or three years down the line and he will get even better.’

Chelsea has won their last six matches in all competitions, including their wain against Ajax on Wednesday.
