Newcastle United are reportedly hopeful of landing the signature of Chelsea’s Timo Werner in the forthcoming January transfer window.
The Germany international’s future in the English capital with Thomas Tuchel’s side hangs in the balance heading into the mid-year window with Bayern Munich keeping close tabs on his current situation.
Joining the Bundesliga champions in the fray for Werner are Newcastle United who on the back of their recent financial takeover are backed to be big spenders come January when the transfer window reopens.
Werner remains on the sidelines of late with COVID-19 but the former Leipzig man has failed to justify his purchase in the summer of 2020 by Chelsea and Tuchel could be forced into recouping the sizable fees spent on the forward should Newcastle come calling.
Journalist Christian Falk while speaking to BILD claimed that the Magpies will eye up a move for Werner with the new gaffer Eddie Howe seeking reinforcements in the final third to add some much-needed firepower.
“Newcastle would also like Vlahovic, but he is young and needs sporting success now, so whether he would go to Newcastle isn’t clear.
“That’s maybe one for next year if they stay in the Premier League. All the money helps them.
“With Werner, they reckon they’ve got a bit of a chance. They’ve got contacts with the management. One of their players (Fabian Schar) is also managed by the German agency that represents Werner.
“Whether Werner will end up feeling so frustrated at Chelsea and then say ‘I’ll give it a go in Newcastle’ is the big question.”
