Chelsea is expecting Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy to pass a late fitness test before the Champions League clash against Sevilla on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge.
Mendy missed the Premier League game against Southampton due to an injury in the thigh that he suffered during the international break. Kepa Arrizabalaga took the spot between the sticks and although made some good saves, he was partly responsible for not saving the second goal of the Saints that inspired them to make a 3-3 comeback.
Mendy was expected to be out of the first game of this current season’s UCL but coach, Frank Lampard is still assessing whether there is any hope to put him in the starting XI.
The scenario changed as per The Telegraph reports when Mendy was seen on Sunday and Monday training with the Blues. There have been some speculations that Mendy can still feature in the group stage game to face Julen Lopetegui’s side. His Premier League debut saw him keeping a clean sheet as he was not at all tested by Crystal Palace in the 4-0 victory.
Lampard will undoubtedly push Mendy to play the game as he doesn’t have any faith in Kepa’s abilities anymore now. Willy Caballero is a decent option but Lampard will opt to go for Mendy if he’s fit just before the match because why not!
