Liverpool are the frontrunners in the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount

As reported by Sky Sports, Liverpool are the frontrunners in the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount as the 24-year-old is unable to reach a new contract agreement at Stamford Bridge this summer.

The English midfielder has been linked with a summer transfer to Liverpool over the past six months or so since contract negotiations have stagnated there and the player has seen his role reduced under new manager Graham Potter.

It has started to feel as though it would be a small surprise if the move ultimately doesn’t happen because the links have been so nonexistent. So today brings us yet another piece of Mount transfer rumors to add to the collection.

Insiders close to the player believe a move to Anfield will help Jürgen Klopp in rebuilding his midfield. However, the idea of selling Mount to a domestic rival could always be the major roadblock.

With the wealth of the Premier League, it’s possible that there aren’t many possibilities for moving a player like Mount in the current economic climate unless it’s to a domestic competitor. Last summer, Chelsea acquired Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for a decent sum.

However, the current scenario looks weird given Mount’s club training status and the fact that, prior to Potter taking over as manager, both Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard considered the midfielder to be a regular starting XI player.

But, given how long his contract negotiations with Chelsea have dragged out and the fact that his opportunities under Potter have been few, it clearly feels as though his future likely rests elsewhere—with Liverpool still the likely destination.

Mount is a seasoned Premier League player with 33 goals and 37 assists in 192 appearances for Chelsea and. Mount, who has 36 caps for England as well, has been a vital player for both club and country.

The Reds would make a great move if they were to steal one of Chelsea’s homegrown players, but they still need more. In spite of links to Jude Bellingham and Matheus Nunes, Liverpool would still need another midfielder or two even if Mount does arrive.
