Chelsea coach Frank Lampard considers the Bayern Munich defeat in the last season’s Champions League game to be a lesson learned for the youngsters who played.
In the round of 16 face-off against Bayern Munich, the German club thrashed the Blues 7-1 on aggregate before they emerged as the Champions League winners by defeating Paris Saint Germain.
Lampard has pointed out the match to the youngsters to expose the difference in levels between the two clubs currently. Ahead of the UCL clash this season against Sevilla, Lampard is desperate to improve his squads in all the areas taking the example of the reigning UCL champions.
“It is a great platform to learn because you’re playing against the best, and we played against the best in Bayern Munich,” Lampard told a news conference as per Goal reports.
“We were a young team last year, working a lot to improve, and the Bayern game was a great marker for the young players in the squad to realize the levels that need to be attained. I remember having that myself as a young player.”
Of the players we have brought in, some have more Champions League experience than others.”
Unlike last season, Chelsea has experienced UCL players in the squad namely Timo Werner, UCL runners up last season captain-Thiago Silva, winger Kai Havertz and historic Ajax’s run of the UCL candidate-Hakim Ziyech.
However as the matches have been played so far, the new faces are yet to gel as a team as to was evident from the lapse of concentration in the Southampton match where they gave the match away after leading 2-0.
The Saints took the opportunity to make an incredible comeback against Chelsea to make it 3-3 in the extra time.
“I mentioned before about concentration, focus and discipline and that becomes even more important here than other competitions because of the level of Champions League,” Lampard added.
“That’s what I would always make very clear to the players going into a match against someone of the quality of Sevilla.”
Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla will visit the Stamford Bridge to play the first game of the group stage against Chelsea on Wednesday.
