Bayern Munich 4-1 Chelsea Match Report | Champions League 19-20

Chelsea FC’s 2019-20 season finally came to a finish, however, was marked by a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Bayern Munich. Ahead of their travel to Germany, Frank Lampard’s side did face a rather one-sided battle against the Bundesliga giants who had a three-goal advantage in their favor from the first of the two-legged encounter.

And if the Blues did harbor huge ambitions of staging a comeback at the Allianz Arena, things couldn’t have gone off to a worse start for the visitors than Hansi Flick’s men racking up two goals on the scoresheet within the first 25 minutes.

After being brought down by Chelsea FC goalkeeper Willy Cabellero inside the box, Robert Lewandowski made no error in converting the resulting spot-kick to give his side the lead just ten minutes into the game. A rather poor display of possession by the Blues’ midfield led to Lewandowski turning provider for Ivan Perisic who calmly slotted the ball past Cabellero into the bottom corner.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, being given a rare start by Lampard, found the back of the net on the other end of the pitch with a wonderful curling effort. However, following a lengthy VAR check, Odoi’s goal was disallowed after Tammy Abraham was deemed to be in an offside position.

A mistake by Bayern shot-stopper Manuel Neuer allowed Abraham to pull one back for his side on the brink of half time. The goal by the 22-year old striker did give a glimmer of hope to Chelsea FC for ensuring a solid performance in the closing 45 minutes of the game.

However, the hosts’ defense was much more stringent following the restart, with Flick’s men seen operating in a higher line. A chance fell Mason Mount’s way but the youngster’s first touch did not allow him to threaten Neuer with a capable effort.

The last 25 minutes of the game, similar to the opening 25, were subject to intense domination by the German giants on their home turf. Frenchman Corentin Tolisso grabbed a close-range finish for Bayern’s third of the Saturday night encounter, just before Lewandowski’s strike into the back of the net ensured a degrading 7-1 loss on aggregate for Frank Lampard’s men.
