Lampard Praises Caballero

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted that Willy Caballero had no chance with either of Leicester City’s goals as Chelsea earned a “well-fought” away point at one of their top-four rivals.

Having started for the Blues in the FA Cup tie at the KC Stadium against Hull City the previous weekend, Argentinean goalkeeper Caballero surprisingly kept his place in the starting lineup for the Premier League trip to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City.

The 41-year-old Lampard explained prior to kick-off that he had not taken the decision lightly to leave out Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after the world’s most expensive goalkeeper come under some heavy criticism after the 2-2 home draw with Arsenal last month.

While Caballero conceded two goals in his first league outing since May 2019, Lampard felt there was very little that the 38-year-old could do with either strike, particularly the first as Harvey Barnes’ drive was deflected beyond him in goal.

While speaking to reporters after the 2-2 draw against the Foxes, Lampard explained that he thought Caballero’s performance was quite good with his saves and “I thought his performance was pretty good, he makes a good save and was comfortable with his feet, I was right behind the Harvey Barnes goal and it was typical, the deflection and instantly it was in. There was not much he could do with either goal, so I’m pleased.”

Chelsea is still in fourth place and will look to improve on their run to ensure they secure a top-four berth for Champions League qualification.
