Gus Poyet backs Frank Lampard’s desire to win trophies with new signings

Chelsea FC great Gus Poyet believes that following the club’s spending spree in this summer’s transfer window, Frank Lampard’s men are capable enough to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

According to Poyet, the 2019-20 season, which was Lampard’s first as the Blues coach, was a transition period for the west London club. However, the upcoming league campaign is a very crucial one for Chelsea FC, one of the biggest players this summer in the transfer market.

The Blues managed to secure a fourth-place finish last season in the Premier League, narrowly ensuring Champions League football for the 2020-21 season. However, the defensive core of Chelsea FC was so often exposed, something Lampard has sought to improve with new acquisitions in the ongoing transfer window.

“Now we are coming to a moment when it looks like Chelsea are really going to invest,” Poyet told the Transfer Show. “It changes the parameters completely from last year. Last year was a transition year, ‘let’s see how we do’, and it was very good.

The former Sunderland boss added that with a number of new players having signed for the Blues ahead of next season, the club should focus on achieving a top-two finish in the 2020-21 Premier League season.

“With the possibility of all these players coming in now, Chelsea need to aim top two, if not winning the league.

Poyet backed Frank Lampard’s desire to win trophies at Stamford Bridge, with the ex-Blues midfielder stating that the Chelsea FC boss is determined to bring laurels back to the club and the signings made by him this summer would help him in achieving the same.

“How ambitious he (Lampard) is, I think he would prefer this, I think he would prefer players coming in and going for the big possibilities.

“I think Frank wants to win trophies and these kinds of players will give him the chance to get closer.”
