Graham Potter has admitted that he does not understand why Chelsea stand-out player, Mason Mount has been a subject of criticism in recent weeks.
Mount has been a regular for his club and nation since making the Blues’ first team in 2019 and helped Chelsea win the Champions League trophy and England reach the Euros final the previous year.
The offensive midfielder has recovered to his best form since Potter’s arrival at Stamford Bridge after a sluggish start to the season, scoring twice and assisting five times in the new manager’s first six games.
He will undoubtedly start for Gareth Southgate’s team and be named to the Three Lions’ roster for the upcoming 2022 World Cup.
Despite Mount’s evident talent, many supporters have frequently urged Southgate to replace him with another of England’s top strikers, such as Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka or the Phil Foden and Jack Grealish pair from Manchester City.
However, Potter is unable to understand this way of thinking and was eager to express his happiness with the 23-year-old’s attitude both on and off the field.
As reported by SkySports, he said:
“It’s surprising that I get questions with mixed opinions about Mason. I find that strange, especially from the outside and then when you work with him you see he’s got everything you need to be a top, top player. Great attitude, and understands spaces, and he can execute assists and score goals. He’s top.”
Mount’s brace against Aston Villa was another example that the Chelsea academy graduate has found his scoring boots once again. He would undoubtedly be a favourite to start for England and he can further prove his worth before the world cup campaign in November.
Southgate has a lot of options to choose from when it comes to the team’s attacking players. However, the surprising fact is that all the youngsters have risen to the occasion in recent weeks and that could be a positive sign for England.
For Mount, he can continue to gather progress and make a name for himself before the special competition next month.
