Glen Johnson urges Chelsea to make a move for the highly-rated Cody Gakpo

Glen Johnson has urged Chelsea to make a move for the highly-rated Cody Gakpo as Graham Potter scouts the market for reinforcements to bolster his misfiring front line.

Chelsea’s struggles in front of the goal this season have been well documented with the Blues scoring just 17 times in 14 Premier League outings, a figure which ranks below the likes of Brighton and Newcastle United.

The Holland international forward Gakpo has scored in all three games at the World Cup so far for the Oranje and is on the radar of Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag who is keen to step up his interest in the PSV man.

He has courted interest from United and Liverpool in the recent past and now Chelsea have been called upon to join their Premier League rivals in the chase for the in-form Dutchman by the ex-England full-back Johnson.

As quoted in a report by The Daily Mirror, Johnson reckons that his former side Chelsea should be in the mix for Gakpo who can prove to be an influential figure in the Chelsea attacking lineup.

“Cody Gakpo has really caught my eye at the World Cup. It’s not easy to score at this level, also the way he reads the game, the way he plays and moves, he looks the real deal.

“In terms of personnel, Chelsea need Gakpo more than Liverpool. Chelsea have always had fantastic wingers, but they never scored goals, if you don’t get in those positions to score goals there’s not much point in you being in the team. Gakpo looks like he could do it in the Premier League, he looks like he would burst onto the scene like Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz has for Liverpool.”
