Giroud and Willian to extend Chelsea contracts in sensational U-turn?

According to the latest reports, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard still remains hopeful that deals can be negotiated with Olivier Giroud and Willian to extend their stay at the club.

The coronavirus outbreak in the UK caused the suspension of the Premier League in March and left a number of issues in its wake. One major issue for Premier League players was the contract situation of players that saw their deals expire over the summer.

Chelsea had a number of players that were set to leave the club after being allowed to run down their respective contracts at Stamford Bridge.

French striker Olivier Giroud and Brazilian winger Willian were among the few that looked set to depart west London in the summer transfer window as Chelsea boss Frank Lampard appeared to give young players more of an opportunity at his first team.

However, with only nine matchdays remaining in the Premier League until the end of the season, Chelsea are looking to offer new deals for their two outgoing stars when the potential English top division returns.

In a shocking turn of events, the 41-year-old English manager explained that he is in the midst of negotiating new deals for Giroud and Willian if the Premier League resumes in the near future.

While speaking to Sky Sports news Lampard revealed, “It is still uncertain if and when play will get underway. We have big players [out of contract] so that’s something I’m obviously looking at very carefully, The ones who are out of contract here have been great servants for the club, and actually have a lot of feelings for the club. Of course, they’ll be concerned about themselves, in terms of how training is now and if the pre-season is a rush they’re going to have to make sure they’re alright. So it’s going to have to be something we have to look at, hopefully, that arrangement can be made so they can stay with us. I would love the squad to look as it has all season, but we’ll have to see how that works.”
