Frank Lampard’s former England teammate Rio Ferdinand has urged the Chelsea FC boss to focus upon signing defensive reinforcements for the Blues this summer. The ex-Manchester United center-back believes that Chelsea FC’s current backline lacks the quality to compete for the Premier League title.

The Blues manager has been prompted by Ferdinand to make priority signings at the back to strengthen the squad. Chelsea FC’s present defensive crisis has been subject to intense criticism for leaking in a great number of goals across last season.
“Definitely adds competition, but I think now he has to look at the other end of the pitch because that’s an area that when you want to win things, big trophies, which Frank will be wanting to do.
“That’s the demands of that club, the foundations in the center-half area, goalkeeper have to be strong.”
It is common knowledge at this point that the Blues manager has been on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, center-back, and a left-back. A number of players including Leicester City star Ben Chilwell and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak have been linked with making the move to Stamford Bridge ahead of next season.
However, the current summer has seen the Blues splash big money on signing quality attacking options. The arrival of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech has cost Chelsea FC a sum of over £90 million. Moreover, the relentless pursuit of 21-year old Kai Havertz will set back Lampard a further £70 million in transfer fees.
Ferdinand, however, was all praises for the transferred business done by the Blues this summer to shore up their attack. The former English international stated that the new signings were an upgrade over the existing options at Lampard’s disposal.
“The players he’s brought in are players that can play and know the level at Champions League football. I think they’re an upgrade on some of the players he’s got.
“I think Frank’s done his work early, that’s good business [signing Werner and Ziyech].
