Edouard Mendy is Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper currently, says coach Lampard

Chelsea coach, Frank Lampard has admitted that the recent performances have made Edouard Mendy already the first choice keeper for Chelsea. The former Rennes keeper joined Chelsea on a five-year contract deal this summer after fan pressure to remove Spanish goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizablaga from the goal.

Kepa’s inconsistent form and big errors have been costing too much point sin crucial games and that frustrated not only the coach but also the fans. That is when they offered Mendy the proposal to join the Blues.

The Senegalese keeper was outstanding in his debut match against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup defeat in tie-beaker. In Chelsea’s first goalless draw group stage match in Champions League against Sevilla.

Senegal international Mendy got injured during the international break but made a speedy recovery to be able to feature in the Sevilla match after recovering from a thigh injury.

When asked if Mendy is Chelsea’s first-choice keeper, the Chelsea coach said that he is at the moment ahead of Kepa in terms of performance as per Sky Sports reports.

“At the moment yes; he’s shown his quality. The way he’s played, he’s played very well, that’s two clean sheets for him already.”

“As it stands he is the number one but that’s always up for grabs. But the way he’s playing I’m very happy. I was pleased with the professional element to the win.
