Chelsea’s striker, Olivier Giroud is hoping to challenge for the Premier League title with his club despite the hurdles in their last five games. The season has reached halfway and there is plenty of games to turn the league to theirs, he believes. Winning the title with the Blues still remains one of his biggest ambitions and he is quite sure that Chelsea has what it takes to win it this season.
The 34-year-old French International has lots of trophies like the French domestic Cup and especially the World Cup under his belt but so far he couldn’t touch the Premier League. This season Chelsea has splashed 200 million euros in the summer transfer to help them achieve success both domestically and in Europe.
The Blues had a shaky start to this season but had a long stretch of an unbeaten run before they again got halted with some poor performances. Their defeat against Arsenal and their latest 3-1 defeat versus Man City at home has restricted their climbing up the league ladder.
‘Because of the fact Liverpool is not flying like the two previous years we can join the title race, that’s my target,’ Giroud said as per the Official Chelsea website.
‘Obviously, we need to learn from the disappointing results but we’re not going to change our target because it’s very tight. I also really want to win this Premier League, it’s something I want a lot.’
Giroud thinks that there are inconsistencies in all the teams and the league is open for all. He says that Liverpool although is on the summit of the table, has not shown the dominance they showed in the previous year.
‘Firstly because there are no fans in the stadiums so maybe the smaller teams if I can say that on paper when they come to places like the Bridge or Anfield or the Emirates against the big teams they maybe play with less pressure. It is easier, that would explain the fact the Premier League is tight this year because of no fans, and also because nowadays the football has improved a lot and the smaller teams have improved a lot. The difference between the small teams and the big teams now is getting smaller and smaller.
‘Also because Liverpool had two amazing years and now with the injuries and no proper break or preparation maybe they feel a bit tired. It’s better for the other teams.’
He is expectant of the fact that the title-contending team like Liverpool is struggling with injuries and that they can take that opportunity. Moreover, each team this season has been playing so well that the league is very tight. It will hardly take five matches to turn the league upside down.
