Frank Lampard seems to have turned to Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico in order to solve the absence of quality left-back options at the Blues. The Argentine defender had been previously rumoured to be Chelsea FC’s alternate option for the full-back position.
However, with Lampard’s repeated attempts to finalize a deal for Ben Chilwell falling through, Tagliafico seems to be the preferred alternative to the Leicester City star. The 27-year old has been a major presence for Ajax since signing for the Dutch side in 2018. He has even emerged as a regular starter for the Argentina national team in recent years.
Chelsea FC’s defensive woes have taken a turn for the worse in recent times. The Blues were subject to a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in their latest Champions League encounter. The defeat to the German giants away from home marked the end of Frank Lampard’s side’s European campaign this season.
The club’s supporters have been clamouring for further defensive reinforcements this summer to shore up the backline. Current first-team left-backs Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri have been nothing but inconsistent in their displays for Chelsea FC since Lampard’s hiring as the boss. Both full-backs are set to be offloaded ahead of the upcoming season.
Besides making a move for Tagliafico, Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana too is high on Lampard’s shortlist this summer. Reports suggest that the Blues manager may end up making a double swoop for the Ajax duo as an effort to fortify his defensive options.
