Chelsea’s defensive problem will disappear once the players gel together says Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell is confident about fixing Chelsea’s defensive problems and thinks that will happen only when the new faces of the clubs get accustomed completely with each other.

The former Leicester fullback is expected to feature against Crystal Palace on Saturday which can be his Premier League debut for the club. He was suffering from injury problems and missed the pre-season with other Chelsea teammates. And now, he has fully recovered from his plantar fascia injury.

Chelsea has been exposed to set-pieces and counterattacks just like the previous season already although Frank Lampard has continued to put the effort into fixing the backline. Fans are waiting for Chilwell to step into the starting XI and solve the long-standing issue at the left-back position of Chelsea.

“We’re working a lot on the training pitch defensively in terms of hopefully conceding fewer goals from set-pieces and open play. So we’re working hard on that.”

“I think with the players we’ve got here and the players who have been bought in, as well as the coaching staff, it’s a good recipe for things that can happen this season,” Chilwell said in his press conference.

The Blues have struggled to replace Ashley Cole since he departed about six years ago and Ben has spoken to the former star about what to expect in his new club. He is confident about winning big this term as he points out the quality in the squad.

He feels that the lack of pre-season training and consecutive matches has affected most of the players’ fitness on a large scale.

“Hopefully when we build that team chemistry a bit more over the next few weeks, everyone starts training more and gets back to match fitness, and everyone’s together a bit more, it should start to gel nicely.”

“I think it’s the same at all clubs really, there’s been little to no pre-season really,” he added.

It is impossible to make a prediction on how long Chelsea will take time as a squad to improve as that will happen only when all the players adapt to each other efficiently.

Chelsea will be facing Crytal Palace in the next match of the Premier League where they will expect to come back to winning terms after their comeback against West Brom to make a 3-3 scoreline.
