Chelsea’s coach Lampard happy to share points with Sevilla in the first UCL game

Frank Lampard said he was happy to share a point with Sevilla and a clean sheet in the first game of the Champions League was satisfying for him. Chelsea’s defense managed to put the Sevilla attack at the bay after so much criticism of his side’s defensive capabilities.

The Blues coach was very delighted to see his team maintaining their defensive composure throughout the full 90 minutes of the game after conceding an injury-time equalizer against Southampton in the Premier League.

Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy was questionably not sure to feature in the match but in the end, he did appear in his first UCL match for the Blues. He replaced the Spaniard, Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, but he was hardly troubled in an uninspiring match far from the chaos that has been occurring in the early weeks of the Premier League season.

“It feels good to get the clean sheet, it’s something you always strive for,” Lampard told as per the Chelsea official website.

“Thiago Silva was excellent, he has experience and quality. Edouard Mendy had one save to make and he made a good save, he was good with his feet. Against a good team, it was a very organised performance from us.

“Both teams seemed happy with the point I think. We conceded a goal in the last minute the other day so when you have that feeling fresh in your mind it’s not nice. So this game will give us confidence but we haven’t had the personnel in training regularly and the more we have that the better we will get.”

“Two pretty good teams canceling each other out in the first game, which is understandable. We take the point and move on.”

Chelsea’s defence was under huge pressure following the two 3-3 draws already in the opening weeks of the Premier League. The last match at home saw them blowing a 2-0 goal lead to Southampton that ended in 3-3 eventually succumbing to the press.

The coach pointed to individual mistake that has been occurring week in and week out which is costing crucial points in the League for Chelsea.

Chelsea has now won just two of their first six games of the new season but looked very disciplined with Thiago Silva back in the side in the UCL game.
