Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta reflects on Marcos Alonso’s return and the squad depth

Chelsea took on Burnley at Stamford Bridge and it was the anticipated match for the new manager Thomas Tuchel after having a goalless draw in his first match. Tuchel wanted to bring three points to the game which the Blues should have done in the previous games. The first half of the game was very competitive as none of the team can reach the goal post till the 40th minute of the match.

Despite the fact that Chelsea played an outstanding game, they failed to convert opportunities into a goal, at 40th minute with the cute reverse pass from Hudson, Azpilicueta saw a chance and converted it to a goal with a cool head to fire into the top of the net.

“It gave us a welcome boost with half-time approaching. I saw the opportunity in front to run,’ said Azpi as per Chelsea’s Official Website.

‘Callum did very well because he drove at the defenders which created the space for me. When I arrived I didn’t have much time to think, just to hit it as quickly as possible.

‘Luckily it went in and it helped the team. It has been over a year that I didn’t score a goal. I am not used to it but it was good to get the win, and not just that, how we did it was important.

‘It was a very good performance. The team controlled the game totally. We moved the ball, created chances, we defended very well. We didn’t concede a shot on goal so it was a solid performance. It’s a good step.’

Marcos Alonso, who returned to the side after four months, was also amongst the goal scorer along with Azpilicueta. A goal scored by him with a majestic volley sealed the 2-0 victory at the 84th minute of the match. The captain believed in Alonso’s return and his performance after returning to the starting XI after a long time only strengthen the depth of the Chelsea squad.

Azpilicueta further praised Marcos Alonso for his never give up attitude and showing his quality when he was called in by Thomas Tuchel. He was left out in the cold by former manager Frank Lampard and delivered a phenomenal effort to put the Burnley game into bed.
