Chelsea suffer blow as Gregory Kobel signs new contract with Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea target Gregory Kobel has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2028, as reported by German outlet Bild.

Kobel, who arrived at BVB from Stuttgart in 2021, has made a significant impact in the Bundesliga and has been one of the standout performers for the team.

The Swiss star played a crucial role in Dortmund’s title pursuit last season, recording 11 clean sheets in 27 appearances as the team finished in second place, narrowly missing out on the Bundesliga title.

In the current season, the goalkeeper has already secured two clean sheets for the German side in the league as they aim to compete for the title once again.

This contract extension reflects the player’s commitment to the club, and it signifies an important development for the team.

During the summer transfer window, both Chelsea and Man United were interested in Kobel as they were in the market for new goalkeepers to strengthen their squads.

Chelsea had sold Edouard Mendy to Al-Ahli and loaned Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid, leaving them in need of new goalkeepers. Kobel was among the players they considered.

However, Chelsea ultimately opted to sign Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion for £25 million and Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution for £11 million, addressing their goalkeeping needs.

Man United had also expressed interest in Kobel, as they had decided not to renew David De Gea’s contract, allowing him to become a free agent.

However, they ultimately secured the services of Andre Onana from Inter Milan, a player whom their manager Erik ten Hag had prior experience working with during their time at Ajax.

The decision to extend Kobel’s contract with Dortmund will likely please the club’s fans, as he has been one of the team’s most dependable performers in recent seasons.
