Ex-Chelsea superstar Ruud Gullit has stated that Blues’ forward Alvaro Morata is the top class striker that the club needs.
Having endured a rather horrendous debut season in the Premier League last term, Spanish superstar Alvaro Morata has done comparatively well this term. Ever since making a £60 million move from the Spanish capital to London, Morata has struggled for goals and fluidity in his play. Morata netted just 12 times last season and was already linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.
Plenty of pundits and even a section of the Chelsea fans criticized Morata for his poor performances and lack of goalscoring. However, one former Chelsea star who has kept faith in Morata is Dutchman Ruud Gullit. The 56-year-old Gullit believes that Morata can do exceedingly well if he is given the services a centre-forward needs to receive.
Morata scored a brace against Crystal Palace at home and looked a bit sharper and Gullit came to his defense on his assessment of the 26-year-old striker.
While writing on his personal blog Gullit stated that Morata just needs to be used the right way under Maurizio Sarri, “The way they (Chelsea) play would make it difficult for any centre-forward to be prolific. As we saw in Sunday’s win over Palace, Morata comes alive when the ball comes into the box and, to get the best out of him; you need to put crosses in.”
Gullit went on to explain why Real Madrid and Juventus got the best out of Morata while Chelsea are unable to do so, “And if you give Morata that service he will do well – we saw that at Juventus and Real and, even at Chelsea, he scored more headers in the Premier League last season than any other player despite having a difficult season. But, under Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea doesn’t seem to want to attack that way. Their wide attackers – Eden Hazard, Willian or Pedro – like to dribble inside and hold on to the ball, and Morata does not know where to go. There is no space left for him.”
Morata has not yet shown that he can completely be trusted in the front line all by himself. If Chelsea plays to the Spaniard’s strengths maybe Morata can get back his confidence and start scoring on a regular basis.
