In Chelsea FC’s hunt for a new left-back in the summer, David Alaba has emerged as a suitable candidate for Frank Lampard’s side. The Bayern Munich defender is rumoured to be reluctant on extending stay with the Bundesliga winners.
With Lampard’s effort to sign his first-choice target Ben Chilwell proving to be futile, the Blues manager has shifted his focus onto other targets. FC Porto’s Alex Telles has also been considered by Lampard as the Chelsea FC left-back alternative next season.
However, speculation linking Alaba for a move to Stamford Bridge is surprising. The Austrian international has been with Bayern Munich since 2008. He has proved to be a very versatile player for the German side. His ability to play at left-back, centre-back, or even in midfield is of paramount importance to The Bavarians.
The 28-year old Alaba has been in contract negotiation talks with the Chelsea FC management. However, both sides have not been able to come to a breakthrough. As a result, Alaba’s future at Bayern Munich hangs in the balance.
With just one year remaining on his contract with The Bavarians, Alaba could seek a move to the Premier League. If the Austrian international does move to Chelsea FC, he would be a formidable addition to the Blues squad. His experience along with his extreme versatility would be a huge boost for Frank Lampard’s relatively young squad.
The 2019-20 season has seen Alaba play in the heart of the Bayern defence and not in his usual left back position. Such an event has occurred due to the rise of Canadian starlet Alphonso Davies, who has been in terrific form this campaign while playing at left-back.
Alaba, on the other hand, has partnered German international Niklas Sule as the two centre-backs for the Bayern side. However, the 28-year old has had no issues while adjusting to the new position and has performed well in Bayern’s league title-winning campaign.
Since making his debut for Bayern in 2008, Alaba has made over 300 appearances for the Bundesliga side. He played an important role in Bayern’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2012-13. Moreover, the Austrian has been instrumental in Bayern winning nine consecutive Bundesliga titles.
