Chelsea defender Thiago Silva confirms talks are underway over a new contract

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva confirms talks are underway over a new contract which could see him stay put with the Blues for another year beyond this summer.

The veteran Brazilian has been a key figure for Graham Potter’s side, featured 18 times for them in the Premier League this term, but speculation over his future at the club has been rife since the turn of the year.

Premier League giants Liverpool, who have been dealt numerous injury blows amid their horrid season so far, were linked with a move for Silva with the centre-back heading into free agency at the end of the season.

Silva has formed a promising relationship with the Chelsea new boy Benoit Badiashile who signed for the Blues in the January transfer window from AS Monaco to provide Potter with much-needed reinforcements at the back.

The Blues man, while speaking to ESPN, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, admitted that he was in talks with the Chelsea camp over a new deal as he asserted his plans of continuing at the Blues.

“We are negotiating. It will probably happen in the next days. My plan is to continue at Chelsea and Chelsea want to continue with me. Chelsea need me with the rebuilding of the club — and here I am.”
