The game got off to a slow start with Chelsea unable to get enough opportunities in the attacking third to cause trouble for the Palace goalie Butland.

Chelsea were handed a major setback early on with midfield man Mateo Kovacic having to be withdrawn off the Wembley pitch with an injury.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount could not enjoy the strongest of efforts through on goal with Edouard Mendy called into action to deny Kouyate’s volley before heading into the halftime break.

Thomas Tuchel’s side showed their dominance when the second period started with Mount once again at the forefront of Chelsea’s endeavours in front of the goal.

The much-awaited breakthrough came from Ruben Loftus-Cheek who found the back of the net for the opening goal 25 minutes from time after Havertz’s deflected delivery came his way.

It came down to Mason Mount to rubber-stamp the win for his side with the England international netting past Butland to make it 2-0 for the Blues.
