The home side started strong and could have an early lead to show for the dominance but Brighton goalie Robert Sanchez denied Azpilicueta’s effort.

An injury for wing-back Reece James came as a major setback to Chelsea who had to bring Marcos Alonso off the bench for the departing England international’s replacement.

The disappointment, however, lasted only for a few minutes with Romelu Lukaku on his return to the starting XI giving his side the breakthrough with a header past Sanchez after a Mason Mount corner.

Edouard Mendy had to come into the action to keep out an Adam Lallana strike with Thomas Tuchel’s men heading into the interval with a slender lead.

Brighton were much more convincing early on in the second period with a host of chances coming their way as Chelsea had shouts for a penalty waved off when Pulisic was tripped by Veltman in the box.

It was in the dying embers of the game, inside the first minute of stoppage time, when Danny Welbeck rose to find the back of the net with a thumping header to secure a well-earned draw for the Seagulls.
