Can Chelsea win the Champions League again in the 2021-22 season?

Chelsea’s being crowned the Champions of Europe took a great number of people by surprise, of which a large majority were the Blues supporters who did not expect their incoming coach Thomas Tuchel to lead an under-fire side to such glory in his first few months in the job.

The west London giants pipped domestic rivals Manchester City to the European crown courtesy of a Kai Havertz strike in the first half in a game that was a show of some superb defensive football from Tuchel’s men.

Few had bet on the Blues, under the charge of a newly appointed manager who had been dealt a defeat in the finals during his time with Paris Saint-Germain, to lead his new bunch of players to the most prestigious of honours in European club football.

Reece James was flawless when coming up against his compatriot Raheem Sterling on the flank and the likes of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho anchored the game for Chelsea from the centre of the park in an incredible manner, helping Tuchel lead his new bunch of players to some much-needed respite back at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel took over the Blues during times of distress for Chelsea who were then under the charge of club icon Frank Lampard with the Chelsea midfield hero unable to hold his flock together in his second season in charge at the Bridge despite splashing the cash quite generously during the previous summer transfer window.

However, then the former Dortmund boss Tuchel took charge, there came about a major turnaround for the Londoners with the newly appointed gaffer holding his fort on for a 14-game-long unbeaten streak before being handed a defeat by the unlikeliest of opponents in West Brom.

Fast forward to this summer’s transfer window on the back of a mega-event in the UEFA European Championships where Roberto Mancini’s Azzuri ran out deserved victors in the end, Thomas Tuchel has a lot on his plate before the 2021-2022 campaign gets underway in less than two weeks.

Aiming to mount a challenge for the Premier League crown is surely an ambitious endeavour for Tuchel and Co. with Manchester City, the defending champions of the land, and the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United sure to give Chelsea a run for their money this upcoming season.

Tuchel, moreover, has a host of issues to confront on the transfer front with respect to incomings and outgoings from the Chelsea first-team camp as the boss’ efforts to bring in a big-name striker for his side fails to bear fruit with neither Erling Haaland nor Romelu Lukaku backed to join the Blues this summer.

The Chelsea manager will also be hoping for a repeat of his side’s brilliance in Europe’s elite club competition, a defence of their Champions League title, with Spanish giants Real Madrid the sole team in the competition’s history to achieve that feat back in 2017.

Chelsea have some niggles to solve heading into the commencement of the new campaign and Tuchel will be keen on seeing the back of some of his fringe players head out the exit door at Stamford Bridge with Tammy Abraham and Emerson Palmieri subject to strong interest from elsewhere.

Should last season’s heroes in Rudiger and Kante maintain their rich vein of form this upcoming campaign for the Blues, Tuchel will have some of his best names on the teamsheet line up alongside potential new recruits from the transfer market to form a star-studded lineup that will be backed to emulate previous success in European football.
