Azpilicueta reflects on the efforts of the Chelsea players who are down the pecking order

Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta has praised the effort and attitude of the players that was recalled to the squad in their 4-0 win against Sevilla in their Champions League group stage match on Thursday.

It was Olivier Giroud’s show as he netted four times against the Spanish giant to top the group. There were nine changes in the first XI. These nine players were those who were down the pecking order or missed several matches due to injuries or whatsoever reasons.

Giroud sent a clear message to the rest of the world that even the Chelsea second team is capable enough to beat Sevilla. Azpilicueta was one of them who was quite happy how his team dominated the game.

‘We managed to dominate the game, which isn’t easy against a team of their caliber and with their top-level experience. Even though we were under pressure from time to time, we always kept that control, and that helped us win the match.’

‘We have some who maybe aren’t getting the minutes that they had in previous seasons, myself included,’ he said. ‘But I think our effort day-to-day has been fantastic from everyone,’ said Azpilicueta as per Chelsea Official website.

The Spanish international spoke high words on Giroud’s performance and said that it was the rest of the hard work he puts into training despite not getting minutes in several games.

‘As a squad, we’re all working very hard. We’ve seen that reflected in Olivier Giroud scoring four goals in a Champions League game. That doesn’t happen every day – but it doesn’t happen by itself either. A lot of work that went into that.’

The Chelsea full-back also spoke about the defence system of the Blues and how the players- Antonio Rudiger, Emerson Palmieri and Andreas Christensen carried their duties perfectly. All these players with Cesar himself restricted the Sevilla attack and yet again managed a clean sheet.

He feels that it is a dream start to the new campaign and they must focus on the coming matches in order to strive for success.
