Atletico Madrid register interest in signing Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta

Atletico Madrid have reportedly been credited with a strong interest in making a swoop for Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta whose stay in the English capital comes to a close this summer.

According to reports from the Spanish news publication AS, Atletico Madrid are mulling over signing the Blues veteran defensive star Azpilicueta as a replacement for the outgoing Kieran Trippier at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Trippier is in line for a return to the Premier League with Newcastle United, on the back of thier recent takeover, set to make the England international their first major signing of the Janaury transfer window which is now underway.

Atletico giving the nod for Trippier’s sale to The Magpies could potentially cost the Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel a valuable asset at the back in the 32-year-old Azpilicueta who has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel, however, will ponder hard in light of Atletico’s interest in the Chelsea skipper with a long-term injury layoff on the cards for Reece James following last week’s draw against Brighton in league action.
