Atletico Madrid End Pursuit For Marcos Alonso

The latest reports have claimed that La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have given up the chase to sign Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso in the summer transfer window as they consider the Spanish international as a very expensive option.

Atleti manager Diego Simeone has a reputation for his tremendously defensive style of approaching football games because the Argentine manager sets up his Atletico Madrid team in a very pragmatic manner. The La Liga giants finished in 2nd place on the Spanish table behind winners Barcelona but are looking to add some more quality to their ranks in order to compete with Real Madrid and the Catalonian outfit as well.

Brazilian left-back Filipe Luis is already 33 years old and has been linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the summer transfer window and Atletico Madrid want to find a natural replacement in his position and are eyeing up a potential swoop for Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, who is out of favor at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso joined the Blues three seasons ago from Serie A club Fiorentina back in the summer of 2016 and played a major factor in Chelsea’s Premier League triumph in his debut season at the West London club. Alonso helped Chelsea to win the FA Cup and Europa League across his next two seasons but is still considered surplus and a liability at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old left back saw his football on the pitch reduce drastically towards the latter half of this season when Emerson Palmieri was the more preferred option. Although Alonso still has a stunning left foot and is very effective in attacking positions, he is often caught out in defensive positions.

Alonso could provide some stability for Atletico Madrid on the left-hand side of the pitch as he is better utilized as a wing-back rather than a left back but the RojiBlancos are not willing to meet Chelsea’s €40 million valuations of the Spaniard, who initially began his senior professional career in the Spanish capital with Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone will look at other cheaper options in the transfer market to strengthen his squad and reports have stated that Atletico Madrid will pull out of the chase for Alonso.
