AS Roma plotting a Romelu Lukaku-Tammy Abraham swap deal with Chelsea

AS Roma are committed to selling Tammy Abraham during the upcoming January transfer window, as there are numerous interested parties in the striker. But now they are planning to include Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku in the deal.

Last summer, the Italian club was close to parting ways with him, and Aston Villa expressed interest, but an injury disrupted the deal.

Since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in June, Abraham has not played for Jose Mourinho’s team, which has left his prospects at the club in serious doubt.

According to Calciomercato, Roma are considering a strategy to include the English star in a player-plus-cash deal in order to secure Lukaku’s permanent signing.

While the Blues ace has had an impressive start in Rome, the club is seeking a way to bypass his £37 million release clause, and thus, they are planning to use Abraham as a bargaining tool.

The notion of such a deal may seem unconventional, but it becomes more understandable when considering the striker’s history at Stamford Bridge.

As a former Chelsea academy graduate, Abraham played a pivotal role in guiding Frank Lampard’s team to a top-four finish during the tumultuous 2019-20 season, emerging as the club’s top scorer with 15 goals.

In the following season under Thomas Tuchel’s management, Abraham faced challenges in terms of playing time, yet he managed to finish as the joint second-highest goal scorer for the West Londoners with six goals.

The English striker had an impressive record of 30 goals and 12 assists in 82 appearances for Chelsea before they decided to replace him with a £97 million signing in Lukaku.

The Belgian star has proven to be a valuable addition for Roma, scoring eight goals in 11 appearances. However, the cash-strapped Italians may struggle to match his release clause.

If the Serie A club is interested in retaining Lukaku permanently, they should be prepared to meet the necessary fee. Meanwhile, Chelsea have been struggling with scoring goals this season.

Roma’s plan to include Abraham in the deal to sweeten it for Lukaku doesn’t seem to make much sense from Chelsea’s perspective, at least from a sporting standpoint.
