Chelsea’s new summer arrival Kai Havertz has said about not pressurizing himself to justify his enormous price tag with which he was brought to the Stamford Bridge.
The 21 -year old was signed from the German club, Bayer Leverkusen at a record transfer deal which cost around 71 million pounds. He was the most anticipated signing by the Blues- one that was delayed due to negotiations on bonus money with Bayer Leverkusen club. Havertz left his international duties in mid-way and traveled to London to seal his transfer.
Many pundits believe that the big-money move to Chelsea will put pressure on him which can be concerning for a young player’s growth. Being just 21 years of age, Havertz has a lot of years ahead of him to prove his worth.
“Of course it’s a big price tag but I think in football today it’s normal to pay these prices,” Havertz told reporters.
“I will not put a lot of pressure on myself because I think I’m doing not the best or the worst because the price tag is that high.
“I’m trying to focus on football and trying to play my best football here in Chelsea… I’m just playing football, I love to play football. That’s why I’m here,” he said.
The young German international is considered to be a generational talent and fans have been excited for quite a long time to welcome him to Chelsea. Lampard has also talked about his dynamism on the pitch. He can play in a wide range of positions which make him an instrumental weapon in the coach’s hand.
“I played every offensive position at Leverkusen,” he added. “I played as a right-winger, a number 10, a number 6, number 8 sometimes as a striker as well.
“But for me it’s very important to have that flexibility on the pitch and to be creative… I think I can play many positions but for me my best position is as a number 10. I can play on the right side as well or as a striker.
“I need a little time to adapt to the league. It’s very different to Germany but I’m looking forward to it.”
He had a quiet night at the Amex Stadium where Chelsea won 3-1 against Brighton. But he showed immense work rate by tracking down from his attacking position to the Chelsea penalty box to win a ball. The season ahead will speak if he is the right signing for the Blues or not.
