Chelsea suffer setback in pursuit of midfield maestro Frenkie De Jong

Chelsea have suffered a setback in pursuit of midfield maestro Frenkie De Jong whose exit from Camp Nou has been dismissed by the newly appointed manager Xavi.

The Holland international De Jong was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge amid the speculation that the Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was set to dip into the market next summer for a new signing for his midfield roster.

Midfield general Jorginho’s future in the English capital is also reportedly uncertain beyond the next summer with the Italy international looking out for the possibility of resigning for his former side Napoli in the Serie A.

Atletico Madrid loanee Saul Niguez’s misfiring stint has Chelsea looking for an alternative option to keep tabs on with the deadline day recruit in line for a return to his parent club at the end of the season.

Reports from football.london quote Xavi, who was named to the top job at the Catalan heavyweights to much fanfare, asserting that De Jong was there to stay put at Camp Nou with the FC Barcelona side who are backed to return to their very best.

“Our goal is for Frenkie to be happy here. We desperately need that type of player.”

“He is definitely not in the shop window, rather the opposite. The idea is to make him stronger here.”
