Willy Caballero looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge next season despite the Blues wanting to sign another goalkeeper this summer. The 38-year old Cabellaro has been Chelsea FC’s backup shot-stopper throughout the course of his stay at the club.
However, the turn of the year had seen Frank Lampard give substantial first-team involvement to the veteran Argentine international. Chelsea FC No.1 Kepa’s form being dismal of late, Cabellaro was handed opportunities in the Champions League as well. He played both legs of the Last-16 tie against Bayern Munich.
With the Chelsea FC boss being keen on signing a quality goalkeeping talent to displace Kepa at the club, Caballero’s future could be subject to scrutiny. The 25-year old Kepa is likely to be relegated to the bench following the arrival of a new shot-stopper. Such developments would mean Caballero falling further down the pecking order at the Blues.
The 38-year, however, has outlined his intentions of staying put at Stamford Bridge. According to reports, Caballero’s decision comes on the back of him getting as many as five starts in the Premier League this past season.
“I want to keep playing. In the last month, I became the first goalkeeper and we will see what happens in the future. I will keep working hard to have this opportunity again.”
The Argentine international had signed a one-year contract extension with the Blues in May. With Caballero set to turn 40 next year, he could as well be ending his playing career at Chelsea FC.
“I signed a new one-year contract and I am really happy to play with this shirt. [As always] when I’m in second position as a goalkeeper I train as if I am starting.”
