Thomas Tuchel’s men dominated early on in the derby and took a well-deserved lead when central defender Thiago Silva headed home from Mason Mount’s corner in the 23rd minute.
Moments later the veteran Brazilian was once again the hero for his side as he went in to deny Vladimir Coufal from on the line.
The hosts West Ham had a chance to find the leveller five minutes before the half-time break when Chelsea No.1 Mendy failed to clear Jorginho’s backpass and fouled Jarrod Bowen in the process.
Up stepped Hammers playmaker Manuel Lanzini to send Mendy in the wrong direction from the resulting spot-kick and make it 1-1.
Just when David Moyes’ men thought they had found a respite, Chelsea had star man Mason Mount score an absolute stunner to give the Blues the lead heading into the interval.
In the second period, West Ham found a breakthrough in the opening minutes with Bowen driving an effort past Mendy to level the affair as both teams searched for the winning goal.
A moment of luck came Arthur Masuaku’s path with the Hammers wing-back putting in a mishit cross which found the back of the net as Mendy went wrongfooted with the home side sealing a thriller of a win.
