Troy Deeney expects Chelsea to step up their pursuit of Brentford’s Ivan Toney

Troy Deeney expects Chelsea to step up their pursuit of Brentford’s Ivan Toney who has earned rave reviews for his recent displays in the attacking third of the pitch.

Toney’s first England call-up for the games against Italy and Germany had rumours doing the rounds over his Brentford future with a few Premier League bigwigs keeping tabs on his situation.

With five goals in his first six outings for Thomas Franke’s Bees so far this season, Toney remains a name that has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United in the recent past.

Former Watford dangerman Troy Deeney, however, reckons Chelsea could throw their hat in the ring for the prolific Brentford striker Toney with the new Blues boss Graham Potter looking to add firepower to his front line.

In an interview with The Sun ( via The Express), Deeney said Manchester United’s long-standing interest in Toney could be challenged by Chelsea who have often struggled in front of the goal.

“This guy has proven for a few years now that he can do it on the next level.

“I remember Ivan was linked with Arsenal and Manchester United previously and he would have shone there.

“He would have been a perfect fit for United in terms of what they currently need upfront, as well as Arsenal until Gabriel Jesus redefined that role for them.”

“If he has the year he will likely have, even Chelsea will be keeping an eye on him.

“He could go there long-term and be a real success under Graham Potter.”
