Timo Werner had an impressive 2019-20 season for RB Leipzig where he scored 34 goals from 45 appearances across all competitions. His spectacular season tipped lots of European giants to move for the Germany international.
However, it was Chelsea who eventually won the cat race for the 24-year-old striker. The Blues bought him at £47.5m deal to Stamford Bridge.
Manchester City and Liverpool were both strongly linked with Werner before Chelsea signed the prolific frontman.
Chelsea has been dealing with several inconsistent strikers last season, with Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud, and Michy Batshuayi all failing to hold down a regular spot in the team.
The young striker was promising and showed lots of talents which eventually made him Lampard’s priority to sign.
As per some sources, Man City manager Pep Guardiola personally called Werner to convince him to move to the Etihad stadium.
Werner was concerned over a potential lack of the first-team start at Manchester City with Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus in the ranks. This made him reject Guardiola’s offer and he set his heart on a move to Stamford Bridge.
The Englishman seemed to continue his goal-scoring streak after a classic goal against Spain in Germany’s Nations League draw.
