Three things we learned after Chelsea’s 3-1 victory against Southampton

Callum Hudson-Odoi will take some time to get up to speed

Callum Hudson-Odoi made his first start of the season in the Premier League and on this evidence he will take some time to get back to full fitness. Should have scored when he was set up by Willian and should have done better late in the second half when the goal opened up for him on the counter-attack but he took too long allowing the defenders to get back in position.

The 19-year-old is tipped for greatness and will get more opportunities throughout the season but will need to start taking his opportunities.

Tomori has an error in him

Fikayo Tomori was announced in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad after an impressive last few games. The 21-year-old has all the attributes to be a great defender but showed in this game that he needs to improve his decision making.

Tomori was guilty of losing the ball in a dangerous position on three separate occasions and was lucky not to be punished.

The academy graduate’s decision making will improve with experience but he will need to cut out errors in his game if he is going to get to the next level.

Pulisic makes a statement

A lot of the pre-match talk has been about Christian Pulisic being left out of the 18 men matchday squad to play Lille and there was the talk of Pulisic leaving on loan in January. A lot of American soccer fans even accusing Lampard of being biased against American players.

Pulisic was given just over 10 minutes to make an impact when he came on in the 78th minute and the 22-year-old did not disappoint.

The American invited the Southampton defenders towards him only to brilliantly slide the ball past them for Batshuayi to slot home.

Pulisic has put himself in contention to start Chelsea’s next game after Callum Hudson-Odoi did not enjoy the best of evenings against Southampton.
