Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to decide against recalling Billy Gilmour from his loan spell at Norwich City despite the youngster’s fall down the pecking order at Carrow Road.
Tuchel had been keen on shipping Gilmour out this summer for a season-long loan arrangement so that the Scotland international could earn some regular first-team action away from Stamford Bridge.
Despite a positive start to life for Daniel Farke’s Norwich outfit, Gilmour has found it hard to cement his berth on the team sheet amid The Canaries enduring a woeful run of form which sees them sit at the bottom of the league table.
There has been the talk gaining ground of late that Chelsea are pondering over a recall for their star loanee with Gilmour having served as an unused substitute in five of the last seven outings for the Premier League’s new boys Norwich.
Tuchel, however, played down such suggestions while speaking to reporters ( via The Daily Express) with the German adamant that Gilmour will earn his chance to shine during his stint with The Canaries.
“We will take the decision in January [if he is recalled], not now.”
“I met Billy around the Norwich match and things were clear when we decided together. He needed more minutes in another club, the challenge was clear that he needed to fight his way through.
“Things are maybe not going as he wishes right now but it’s not the moment to cancel the whole project. Sometimes these weeks arrive that the situation is stuck, but you have to hang in there and show your quality.
“That sharpens your character and it will be a big chapter in your career. It will be the same for Billy.
“It’s the moment right now to have solutions for January and have talks to bring him back.”
