Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel Thomas Tuchel has asserted that he retains his faith in the under-fire German striker Timo Werner who has endured a patchy run of form in front of the goal.
Werner joined the Blues last summer in a big-money move from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig and despite the hype surrounding his transfer, he failed to vow the Chelsea supporters who had expected much from him on the goalscoring front.
Tuchel acted quick in this summer’s transfer window to bring in fresh blood for his attacking roster as Romelu Lukaku made the move to Stamford Bridge with the Belgium international set for a return to Premier League action.
Lukaku’s arrival at the scene has given birth to talk of Werner being sidelined from the first-team plans of Thomas Tuchel who has long desired for a proven goal-getter to lead the line for the Blues.
The German coach, however, refuted such speculation concerning Werner’s first-team berth being under threat in his pre-match presser ahead of the Aston Villa clash as he said that the forward remains key to Chelsea and will be backed to perform better when paired with his new teammate Lukaku.
“I am sure that we will find games and solutions where we play with both of them (Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku). We did already and Timo and Romelu can be a good fit together. Timo loves to play around a reference up front and Romelu is clearly our reference up front being a tall and physical player.
“The most important is he finds his rhythm and confidence and joy and makes his point and makes his way into the team. The players are in charge to take their positions and fight for their positions and once they have it to not give it away.
“We are very happy that he scored and played (for Germany in the international break) and on we go. We have not too many players but we have players with high quality and high ambition and Timo is clearly a guy that we count on and that is absolutely necessary we have him on high level.”
