Premier League icon Thierry Henry has questioned Chelsea’s decision to sign Romelu Lukaku in wake of the striker’s woeful run of form of late.
Lukaku, who made the move to west London last summer from Serie A giants Inter Milan, has failed to provide the attacking firepower in recent games for Thomas Tuchel’s men.
The Belgium international touched the ball just seven times in Chelsea’s 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace last time around in top flight action with the club supporters directing their ire towards the £97.5 million signing.
Tuchel made a major decision in dropping his record purchase from the starting team sheet in the 2-0 win over Lille for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie midweek at Stamford Bridge.
Henry, Lukaku’s coach in the Belgium national team setup, while speaking to CBS Sports insisted that the player was not fit for Chelsea’s style of play and his recent showings were testament that the Blues should not have splashed the cash on him.
“Right from the start I raised a question to myself, would he fit into this team? For Rom to adapt to the way Chelsea play, it takes time, it’s not an easy one.
“Is it normal that he only has seven touches [against Palace]? No, that’s also not normal, regardless of if the coach likes you or not. That shouldn’t happen.
“They need to move forward on that but it’s a tough one to read. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know how that happens in 90 minutes. But what’s the solution?
“The solution is for him to find a solution to make sure he can adapt to the way they play.
“They like to press, to be active and to change the front three. He likes to stay in the middle so it makes it very difficult for him to adapt to the situation.
“But, again, why did you go and get him?”
