Chelsea earned a point as Mason Mount scored a second-half penalty to secure a 1-1 draw against Southampton in their Premier League away game on Saturday. After winning the game against Newcastle 2-0, they went on to win three crucial points.
Southampton scored in just 33 minutes and this was after a long time Chelsea conceded under Thomas Tuchel. Mount scored his fourth goal of the league as he won a penalty and converted it.
Southampton ended their losing streak of six games and has now increased their gap to 11 points from the bottom three teams of the Premier League. Jannik Vestergaard hit the crossbar with a header while Chelsea’s early attacks came when Reece James’ cross was hit wide as Marcos Alonso volleyed it wide from a good position.
Tuchel’s side dominated with 73% of possession in the first half with the only shot on target coming from defender Antonio Rudiger. Minamino gave his team lead as Nathan Redmond’s beautiful pass found him splitting the Chelsea defense.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side reacted brilliantly after mount’s equalizer and came very close to take a lead. Mount and Hudson Odoi although tried to increase the lead as well but were disappointing and couldn’t pose a threat to the Southampton defense. Chelsea is in the fifth position in the Premier League table and Tuchel will be disappointed not to secure three crucial points from this game.
