The visitors started the contest on the front foot and the returning wing-back Marcos Alonso got on the scoresheet with his first goal in league action since opening day with the Spaniard teed up by Mason Mount.
Mount turned to score himself just minutes after providing Alonso with the England international striking the second goal with a fine shot as he continued his fine run of form on the travels to St. Mary’s.
Timo Werner, on his recall into the first XI for Saturday’s game, made it 3-0 for Chelsea with just over 20 minutes played in a clear indication that the visitors were on course to post a big win against The Saints.
Werner’s fellow German Kai Havertz joined in on the run as he registered his seventh in his last 10 outings with the latter set up for an easy tap in after Werner had done the hard work.
It was no different a start to the second period with Southampton unable to contain an inspired Chelsea side who got their fifth with only three minutes played with Werner the man to double his account for the afternoon.
Edouard Mendy was called into action in a rare moment with the Chelsea goalie making a fine stop to deny Che Adams in the first and last chance on goal from the home side.
Mason Mount completed his brace as well with the English attacker slotting home from close range after Forster had kept out efforts from Alonso and Werner.
