Former Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers striker Alan Shearer has delivered a brutal assessment of Chelsea’s defenders Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen after their poor performance against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.
It was an afternoon to forget for the Blues as they lost out 3-1 against the Toffees, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin netting twice for Everton to add to Richarlison’s early header.
Mateo Kovacic scored for Chelsea, but it was not enough to get anything out of the game, with the hosts claiming a deserved win.
Chelsea defender Christensen was at fault for Everton’s first goal when he allowed himself to be beaten to Djibril Sidibe’s cross by Richarlison to power the home team into a fifth-minute lead.
And it was a similar story right at the start of the second-half when the Danish defender failed to deal with a bouncing ball before being muscled off the ball by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
And BBC pundit Alan Shearer has delivered a brutal verdict on Chelsea’s defending in the game, amid praise for Everton’s two-goal hero.
Speaking on Match of the Day, the former Newcastle United striker said: “I was hugely impressed with him [Calvert-Lewin] because he absolutely battered the two center-halves, [Kurt] Zouma and [Andreas] Christensen, he didn’t give them a moment’s peace.
“When you’re a forward, if you can’t win a header, then make sure the defender can’t win it either. He did it all afternoon.
“He uses his body, he uses his strength. The two center-halves didn’t know what day it was and he did it brilliantly. He’s too strong for Christensen, he deserved that, doing his work rate for his team and winning the ball back.”They couldn’t handle him, they didn’t want to have a fight with him or scrap with him.
Antonio Rudiger’s return from injury will mean that Zouma or Christensen or both will be dropped to the bench with many fans calling for a Rudiger- Tomori partnership at the back but it remains to be seen whether Lampard will risk throwing Rudiger straight back into the side after his injury woes this season.
