Senegalese international emerges as a target for Chelsea to replace Kepa

The Blues have opened talks with Ligue 1 club Rennes over the availability of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy ahead of next season. Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard wants to sign the Senegalese shot-stopper to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa has fallen out of favour with the manager of the west London club in recent months. The Spanish international was not even given minutes on the pitch in the last few fixtures for Lampard’s side last season, including the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup final.

Chelsea FC have been priced out of potential deals for Lampard’s main goalkeeper target in this summer’s transfer window. Atletico Madrid’s No.1 Jan Oblak, rumoured to the Blues’ first-choice for replacing Kepa between the sticks, is valued at nearly £110 million by the La Liga outfit.

Mendy, a 28-year old Senegal international, is being considered as a much cheaper alternative signing, according to reports. Rennes are also believed to be open to selling their goalkeeper ahead of next season if the Blues table a reasonable offer for him.
