Saul Niguez is set to extend his stay with Atletico Madrid beyond this summer’s transfer window despite Chelsea’s interest in landing his signature.
The Spain international had been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge before Tuesday’s deadline day with reports of Chelsea reaching an agreement to sign the Atletico Madrid midfield man in a season-long loan deal.
Thomas Tuchel was understood to have kept close tabs on the 26-year-old La Liga star who had fallen down the pecking order in Diego Simeone’s camp and was looking for a switch elsewhere this summer amid interest from the Premier League.
Reports from Mundo Deportivo now back Saul to stay put at the La Liga holders despite Chelsea believed to be leading the race earlier on to land his signature on a loan basis with no clarity of an option to buy clause in the deal.
Manchester United and Liverpool had also been in the fray at one stage over the course of this summer window to sign the Atletico wantaway first-teamer to strengthen their ranks.
